Nemonte Nenquimo, Indigenous Waorani leader committed to defending her ancestral territory and her people’s survival in the Amazon rainforest, will give a public talk on Tuesday 7 June, at 5pm CET, at the Alanus University in Bonn/Alfter.
Nemonte Nenquimo was raised in the traditional community of Nemonpare in the Pastaza region of the Ecuadorian Amazon. She co-founded the Indigenous-led nonprofit organization Ceibo Alliance in 2014 to protect Indigenous lands and livelihoods from resource extraction alongside its sister organization, Amazon Frontlines. In 2018, she was elected the first female president of OWAP, the Waorani organization of Pastaza province.
Nemonte led her people to a historic legal victory against the Ecuadorian government, which protected half-a-million acres of primary rainforest in the Amazon from oil drilling and set a precedent for Indigenous rights across the region. Today, Nemonte is fighting to ensure the safety of her people amid the dual threats of COVID-19 and the ongoing ecological crisis in the Amazon. Nemonte is winner of the 2020 Goldman Environmental Prize for Central and South America and the United Nations’ Champions of the Earth Award. She was also named to the BBC’s 100 Women of 2020 and TIME 100 list of the most influential people in the world.
Thanks to a collaboration between Amazon Frontlines, Flourishing Diversity, One Resilient Earth and the Alanus University, Nemonte Nenquimo will give a public talk in Spanish with German translation, on the Alanus University campus, on Tuesday 7 June. The talk will be followed by a question & answers session.

Nemonte Nenquimo, Anführerin der indigenen Waorani, die sich für die Verteidigung ihres angestammten Territoriums und das Überleben ihres Volkes im Amazonas-Regenwald einsetzt, wird am Dienstag, den 7. Juni, um 17 Uhr MEZ einen öffentlichen Vortrag an der Alanus Hochschule in Bonn/Alfter halten.
Nemonte Nenquimo wuchs in der traditionellen Gemeinschaft von Nemonpare in der Region Pastaza im ecuadorianischen Amazonasgebiet auf. Im Jahr 2014 war sie Mitbegründerin der von Indigenen geführten gemeinnützigen Organisation Ceibo Alliance, die sich gemeinsam mit ihrer Schwesterorganisation Amazon Frontlines für den Schutz indigener Ländereien und Lebensgrundlagen vor dem Abbau von Ressourcen einsetzt. Im Jahr 2018 wurde sie zur ersten weiblichen Präsidentin von OWAP, der Waorani-Organisation der Provinz Pastaza, gewählt.
Nemonte führte ihr Volk zu einem historischen juristischen Sieg gegen die ecuadorianische Regierung, der eine halbe Million Hektar Primärregenwald im Amazonasgebiet vor Ölbohrungen schützte und einen Präzedenzfall für indigene Rechte in der gesamten Region schuf. Heute kämpft Nemonte für die Sicherheit ihres Volkes inmitten der doppelten Bedrohung durch COVID-19 und die anhaltende ökologische Krise im Amazonasgebiet. Nemonte ist Preisträgerin des Goldman-Umweltpreises 2020 für Mittel- und Südamerika und des Champions of the Earth Award der Vereinten Nationen. Außerdem wurde sie von der BBC in die Liste der 100 Frauen des Jahres 2020 und in die TIME 100-Liste der einflussreichsten Menschen der Welt aufgenommen.
Dank einer Zusammenarbeit zwischen Amazon Frontlines, Flourishing Diversity, One Resilient Earth und der Alanus Hochschule wird Nemonte Nenquimo am Dienstag, den 7. Juni, einen öffentlichen Vortrag auf Spanisch mit deutscher Übersetzung auf dem Campus der Alanus Hochschule halten. Im Anschluss an den Vortrag besteht die Möglichkeit, Fragen zu stellen und zu beantworten.
